In Depth - Coronation in Thailand

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has been crowned in a three-day coronation ceremony. The elaborate ceremony was highly colorful and a striking mix of Brahminical and Buddhist rituals and traditions .

The rituals point to the long association of the country with India and throws light on the links between the two ancient civilizations.

King Vajiralongkorn inherited the throne in 2016 when his long-reigning father Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away.

And just days before his coronation ceremony, the new king married his long-term partner and royal consort who will now be Queen Suthida.

Thailand has a constitutional monarchy, but the royal family is highly revered by Thais and wields considerable power.

The coronation comes at a time of political uncertainty. A general election was held on 24 March, the first since the army took control in a coup in 2014, but a new government has yet to be declared.

In our episode of In Depth, we look at the coronation ceremony of the Thai King and the rituals and the rich history of the country that has evolved into a Constitutional monarchy in South east Asia.
