ලෝකයේ මේ වන විට කැප්සිකම් ගණයට අයත් වන විශේෂයන් 25 කට ආසන්න ප්‍රමාණයක් සොයා ගෙන ඇතත් මිනිස් වාසයට ලංව ඇති (Domesticated) එනම් වගා කරනු ලබන විශේෂ 5 ක් හඳුනාගෙන ඇත.

මිරිස්වල සම්භවය ලෙස සලකනුයේ මෙක්සිකෝව සහ මධ්‍යම ඇමෙරිකාවයි. Capsicum annuum විශේෂයට අයත් මිරිස්, ඒවායේ ඵලයන්හි ලාක්ෂණික ලක්ෂණ එනම් සැරභාවය, වර්ණය, හැඩය, ප්‍රමාණය, ආවේණික සුවඳ හා ලබා ගත හැකි ප්‍රයෝජන අනුව තව දුරටත් වර්ගීකරණය කළ හැක.

පෝෂණ අගය හා ඖෂධීය ගුණය

පෝෂ්‍යදායි ආහාර අතරට නොගැනුන ද මිරිස්වල විටමින් C, කැරෝටින් හා නියැසින් වැනි විටමින් ද කැල්සියම් හා යකඩ වැනි ඛණිජයන් ද අඩංගුව ඇත. මිරිස්වල අඩංගු වන කැප්සයිසින් (Capsaicin)නම් රසායනික සංයෝගය මෙහි සැර ගතිය ඇති කිරීමටත්, ඖෂධීය ගුණයක් ගෙන දීමටත් වැදගත් වේ. කැප්සයිසින් නම් රසායනික සංයෝගය ශ්‍රාවය කරනු ලබන්නේ මිරීස් කරලේ ඇට සවිවී ඇති කොටස වන ඩිම්බ බජ්ධයේ (බීජ බන්ධයේ) (Placenta)පිහිටා ඇති ග්‍රන්ථි විශේෂයකිනි.
Nutritional value and medicinal value

Capsaicin, a chemical compound found in chillies, is important for its astringency and medicinal properties. මිරිස්වලින් ගනු ලබන කැප්සයිසින් යොදා නිෂ්පාදනය කරන ආලේපන වර්ග සෙම්ගෙඩි, ගලපටලය හා උගුර බැරැන්ඩිය මෙන්ම ශ්වසන රෝගවල දී ප්‍රතිකාර ලෙස යොදාගනී. සර්ප විෂ නැසීමේ ඖෂධ නිෂ්පාදනය හා තුවාල සඳහා ප්‍රතිජස්වක ඖෂධ නිෂ්පාදනයේදීත් කැප්සයිසින්වලට විශේෂ වැදගත්කමක් ලැබී ඇත.සමේ අසාත්මිකතාව, කුෂ්ඨ රෝග හා හර්පීස් වැනි සමේ රෝග සමනයට ද අධික ලෙස මුත්‍රා පිටවිම වැළැක්විම මෙන්ම මුත්‍රාශයේ ධාරිතාව වැඩි කිරීම සඳහාත් කැප්සයිසින් ඖෂධයක් ලෙස යොදා ගත හැකි බව බටහිර රටවල කරන ලද පර්යේෂණවලින් පෙන්වා දී ඇත.
මිරිස් කරලේ ළපටි අවස්ථාවේ සිට මේරිම දක්වා අඩංගු විටමින් C ප්‍රමාණය ක්‍රමයෙන් වැඩි වුවත්, ඉදීමේ සිට වියළීම දක්වා ක්‍රමයෙන් අඩුවන බව පර්යේෂණවලින් සොයාගෙන ඇත. එමෙන්ම අමු කරල් පිසීමේ දී විටමින් C වලින් තුනෙන් එකක් (1/3) පමණ ප්‍රමාණයක් විනාශයට ලක්වන බව ද සොයාගෙන ඇත.
