Kratos - God Of War | Gaming Lore #gaming #videogames #mythology

Kratos is known as the main character of God of War, a Spartan driven by rage and immense power.

But the name “Kratos” is more than just a cool character name.

In Greek, Kratos (Κράτος) literally means “power”, “strength”, or “dominion.”
It also comes from a figure in Greek mythology: Kratos, the personification of strength and authority.

In mythology, Kratos is not just powerful—he is also portrayed as brutal and merciless.
He serves Zeus and appears in Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound, where he helps chain Prometheus as punishment.

He even mocks Prometheus and Hephaestus for opposing unnecessary violence, while defending Zeus’ harsh rule and claiming that Prometheus will never escape his punishment.

Interestingly, in God of War II, the game version of Kratos does the opposite—he actually frees Prometheus.

During the development of God of War, the name “Kratos” was chosen very late—and coincidentally matched the meaning and mythological figure.
Some developers even called it a “happy accident”, because the name perfectly fit the character they had created.

In a way, both versions share something in common
a brutal force serving—or fighting against—greater powers.

From just a name… to one of the most iconic characters in video game history.
