Scotrail Class 385042 1Y71 0636 Edinburgh to Glasgow Central near Haymarket #trainspotting #scotrail
Scotrail Class 385042 1Y71 0636 Edinburgh to Glasgow Central near Haymarket Maintenance Depot on 20th September 2025.
Haymarket Maintenance Depot is a major railway facility in Edinburgh, located close to Haymarket station, that plays a vital role in servicing and maintaining trains operating across Scotland’s rail network. Established in the 19th century, it has a long history of supporting both steam and modern rolling stock.
Today, the depot is operated by ScotRail and is primarily responsible for maintaining diesel and electric multiple units, including the Class 170 and Class 385 fleets used on key routes such as the Edinburgh to Glasgow main line. Equipped with modern inspection sheds, fuelling points, and servicing facilities, the depot ensures that trains are kept in safe and reliable condition for daily passenger services. Its strategic position near Edinburgh makes it one of the most important rail depots in the country.
Opened in 1842, the station has a rich history and has undergone several modern refurbishments to improve accessibility and passenger facilities. Today, it is a busy commuter hub, offering connections to Glasgow, Stirling, Inverness, Aberdeen, and the wider UK rail network. Its location near Murrayfield Stadium and business districts also makes it a key stop for both daily commuters and visitors.
The Edinburgh to Glasgow Main Line is Scotland’s busiest intercity railway, linking the country’s two largest cities over a distance of about 47 miles (76 km). Opened in 1842, it was one of the earliest main lines in Britain and has played a central role in Scotland’s transport network ever since. The route connects Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street stations, with key stops including Haymarket, Falkirk High, and Croy. It underwent major modernization in recent years, including electrification completed in 2017, which reduced journey times and allowed faster, greener electric trains to run. Today, the line carries millions of passengers annually, providing frequent services for commuters, business travelers, and tourists, and remains a vital link between the cultural and economic hubs of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
