“The first possible consequence is a wider war if Lebanese Hezbollah decides to intervene on Hamas’ behalf. There are unconfirmed reports that Hezbollah has reached out to the Egyptian back-channel to say that if the Israelis go into Gaza on the ground, then Hezbollah will intervene,” Simon said, emphasizing that the reports were unconfirmed but were plausible.

With Israel’s United Nations ambassador Gilad Erdan calling this “Israel’s 9/11” before an emergency UN Security Council meeting earlier and reports of hostages being taken by Hamas, what might happen next?
