Justin Martyr | The First Apology (Chapters 7-12)
Justin Martyr (c. AD 100–165) was a Christian philosopher, apologist, and one of the earliest and most influential defenders of the Christian faith. Born in Flavia Neapolis (modern-day Nablus, in the West Bank), Justin was trained in various philosophical traditions, including Stoicism, Platonism, and Aristotelianism, before converting to Christianity around AD 130.
After his conversion, he viewed Christianity as the "true philosophy"—the fulfillment of all that was good and true in pagan thought. He spent the rest of his life teaching, writing, and publicly defending Christianity. He was eventually arrested and executed in Rome during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, earning him the title Martyr.
Justin wrote his First Apology around AD 155 and addressed it to Emperor Antoninus Pius, his sons (including Marcus Aurelius), and the Roman Senate. The purpose of the work was twofold:
- To Defend Christians from Persecution:
Christians were being condemned simply for bearing the name "Christian"—without fair trials or evidence of wrongdoing. Justin argues that this is unjust, and he calls on the emperor to judge Christians based on their actions, not hearsay or prejudice.
- To Explain Christian Beliefs and Practices:
Justin gives a clear account of Christian doctrine, morality, and worship, showing that:
- Christianity promotes virtue, not vice.
- Christians are loyal, peaceful subjects of the Empire.
- Christian worship is spiritual and rooted in truth, not superstition.
He also attempts to bridge the gap between Christianity and classical philosophy by portraying Jesus as the Logos (Divine Reason)—the very principle that Greek philosophers sought.
The First Apology is one of the earliest Christian defenses of the faith, and it's crucial for understanding:
- How early Christians saw themselves in relation to pagan culture and philosophy.
- What Christian worship looked like in the second century (including descriptions of baptism and the Eucharist).
- The roots of Christian philosophical theology, especially in how Justin blends biblical truth with Hellenistic thought.
