Redneck DIY: Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) (OM642, W164, X164) Cleaning with water and degreaser.

A redneck's guide to cleaning your Mercedes Benz ML, GL, or Sprinter Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) using just your garden hose and some degreasers. The DPF is under the passenger side of your ML, GL or Sprinter, just remove it using some basic hand tools. Then spray clean and shake dry. Lots of people says that I should not hit it with a hammer or bang it on the ground. The truth about DPRs is that they are delicate and expensive and help clean the air, they just need to have some air flow path so the exhaust flows thru. You need enough air flow for performance, and enought blockage so the differential pressure sensor records some pressure.
If you are getting a check engine light, and your code reader shows P1408, it is not EGR, instead it may be an indication that the exhaust backpressure is too high, due to congestion in your DPF. Time to clean out the accumulated soot. The final step in this process is the reset the milage counter in the ECU. You will need a DAS/XENTRY to perform "Adapations".
