“NATO Needs More Weapons Faster” — Mark Rutte Pressures Defence Industry to Deliver!
Mark Rutte warned that NATO allies urgently need faster military production as Europe and North America race to strengthen defence capabilities amid growing global threats.
Asked why defence companies are still struggling to ramp up production, Rutte said one major problem is that defence manufacturers need long-term contracts lasting 5 to 10 years, while governments often operate on short political and budget cycles.
The NATO chief stressed that allies are now moving toward massive increases in defence spending — including the 3.5% core defence target and the broader 5% commitment agreed inside NATO — meaning “hundreds of billions” of additional taxpayer money will flow into the defence sector.
Rutte directly challenged defence industry executives to expand production lines, add extra shifts, and deliver more military equipment without dramatically increasing prices.
He also argued that companies receiving huge public contracts must remember they are heavily dependent on taxpayer money, echoing criticism recently voiced by Donald Trump about excessive executive bonuses inside major defence firms.
The NATO Secretary General said a major “mindset shift” is finally happening across the defence and financial sectors, with growing recognition that Europe and NATO urgently need more Patriot missiles, F-35 fighter jets, SAMP/T systems, ASTER 30 missiles, tanks, ammunition, and military supply chains.
Rutte added that only a few years ago many financial institutions avoided defence investments, but that attitude is now rapidly changing as security concerns dominate the geopolitical agenda.
