Life of a tanner - shaving hides on the 12 inch

Shaving or thinning of hides is done on a 12 inch Turner shaver. It requires years of practice to be able to shave a cowhide in just under 5 minutes. This first shaving thins the hide and opens the fibers to allow the pickling to penetrate the skin. I will run these skins through the shaver a 2nd time, then complete the thinning with my round shaver.
