How to Use Heat Shrink Sleeving

In this video we show how to use heat shrink sleeving or tubing as well as discovering what it is and the applications for which it can be used.

Heat shrink sleeving may be called by a number of names including heat shrink sleeving, heat shrink tubing, electrical heat shrink, and many other names.

Whatever the name used, the heat shrink is a tube or sleeve which can be placed over anything that needs a cover or insulation.

Heat shrink sleeving or tubing can be used for a variety of purposes: insulation, protection against wear, protection against chemicals (although it does not give a perfect seal, and it can be used as an ident, to identify a wire in a wiring loom, cable etc, where different coloured sleeving can be used for the different wires. It can also be decorative, or used for a variety of household jobs.

There are different types of sleeving, but the type most commonly used is made from a polyolefin material and it shrinks at around 120 - 125C. Shrink ratios can be around 2:1 or even 3:1, so when selecting it to go over a wire, etc, make sure it will shrink to provide a tight fit.

A variety of methods can be used to shrink the heat shrink sleeving. In a commercial or manufacturing environment a heat gun would be used. Sadly hair dryers will not normally shrink the sleeving. So at home, a soldering iron can be placed just under the sleeving and its heat will shrink the sleeving. Be careful not to let the soldering iron touch the sleeve otherwise it may burn it. Alternatively a small stove gas lighter or cigarette lighter can be used. Just play the flam over the heat shrink sleeve gently being careful not to burn the sleeve or melt the adjoining wires.

As with any flame or heat source, care must be taken when using it.
