A Data Dictionary is a centralized repository that stores detailed information (metadata) about the data used in a database system. It acts as a reference guide for database administrators, developers, and users, describing the structure, relationships, and constraints of data elements. In simple terms, it contains “data about data.”

The data dictionary records definitions of database objects such as tables, fields, data types, indexes, views, users, and permissions. It also includes information about relationships between tables, constraints like primary and foreign keys, and business rules applied to the data. In a Database Management System (DBMS), the data dictionary helps maintain data integrity, consistency, and security by ensuring that all users and applications refer to data elements uniformly.

There are two types of data dictionaries: Active and Passive. An active data dictionary is automatically updated by the DBMS whenever changes occur in the database structure. It is tightly integrated with the DBMS and ensures synchronization between the dictionary and the actual database. A passive data dictionary, on the other hand, requires manual updates and is often used for documentation or analysis purposes.

In a Multidatabase Management System (MDBMS), the data dictionary plays an even more crucial role by maintaining metadata from multiple heterogeneous databases. It supports data integration, query translation, and schema mapping, enabling users to access distributed data seamlessly.

Thus, the data dictionary is essential for efficient database management, providing clarity, control, and consistency across all levels of data usage.
