Destroyed residential buildings and cars and debris on the streets were seen in Stepanakert, as the city was hit by what the leader of the disputed territory has claimed were mobile rocket launcher systems.
Footage shows destroyed residential buildings alongside damaged vehicles. President of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region Arayik Harutyunyan said that Azerbaijani military forces struck Stepanakert using various rocket launcher systems.
"During the last several days the enemy has been shelling not only villages and cities, but also Stepanakert. [They used] Smerch and Polonez, the most modern multiple rocket launch systems and artillery. In the sky above Stepanakert there are different UAVs, which spin there every second, they don't cease artillery fire on Stepanakert,” he said.
Vice prime minister of Armenia Tigran Avinyan made a statement about rocket attack of Stepanakert in his Facebook account on Sunday.
The Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan reported on Sunday the the Armenian side shelled the city of Ganja which caused casualties as well as destruction of civilian infrastructure. The Defence Minister of the republic Zakir Gasanov stressed that "launching fire from the territory of Armenia on the territory of Azerbaijan is clearly provocative and expands the zone of hostilities."
Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azerbaijani and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation and report of thousands of casualties.
