Let's Rice Against Hunger

Rice is a staple ingredient for Indians. Many families survive only on rice soup when they have nothing to eat. Rice is important for families across India. They're accustomed to eating rice three times a day. You can help feed a poor family by donating rice.

This Rice Against Hunger Campaign can help feed a family for up to a week.

Rice is a staple in almost every Indian household. The lockdown has hurt the stomachs of thousands of Indians. Corona has deprived thousands of daily wage workers and their families of food. Daily wage workers and individuals from villages and towns are accustomed to eating rice three times a day. Corona has destroyed the lives of these families to such an extent that they cannot even eat a bowl of rice for a single meal.

There are many poor families in Avadi, Chennai rural struggling to survive. Basic needs, particularly food an everyday problem for poor family members, including children’s are malnourished. We are selected 125 poor families and distributing a total 500 kg package of monthly rice to the needy family to free them from hunger and who’s under poverty.

1 kg rice cost - Rs 50
10 kg rice per family/month cost - Rs 500
Total 125 families x 10 = 1250 kg rice per month cost – Rs 62,500/ Month

“On days when we cannot afford to buy or cook food, we made porridge (kanji) to feed our children,” said Natarajan, a daily wage worker from south India. 

Like Natraj, many families from marginalized communities survive on porridge, leftover water from steaming rice. On some fortunate days, they might add a few lentils and have some extra rice for a second meal. These are the toughest times for families from marginalized communities. They can only survive if they manage to work and earn for that day. 

“If we work, we get food. If we don't, we starve", said Natrajan.  We urge you to join us. Donate grains of rice to a family that is struggling to feed their children. 

The workers are starving. Their children are starving. India is starving.
