World Championship Wrestling at Perry Lakes
In 1964, an American Jim Barnett traveled to Sydney in Australia, with wrestling promoter Johnny Doyle, to inspect the Australian wrestling scene. They returned to Australia under the banner of World Championship Wrestling, presenting their first card on 23 October 1964, at the Sydney Stadium.
This was a very popular series broadcast on the Nine Network television, where the live wrestling matches were highly promoted. TVW Channel 7 in Perth bought much content from the Packer owned Nine Network at that time, and brought the series to Perth, where it was also highly promoted.
World Championship Wrestling was presented at Perry Lakes. This Australian professional wrestling promotion ran from 1964 until 1978, featuring stars such as Dominic De Nucci and Killer Kowalski.
It seemed to be extremely violent, though in reality the wrestling stars were highly choreographed athletes who provided a convincing performance for the eager audience.
