What is the 1st year in a Bsc Physiotherapy Degree Like?
Hey guys in this video I discuss what the first year in a physiotherapy degree is like?
P.s Excuse dry lips 🤦🏻♂️
So you’ve just got in and you’re ready to go and start studying physio.
Weather you’re a school leaver or someone who is returning to academia after a long hiatus.. it’s important to remember that everyone is in the same boat.
In the first year I remember thinking that everyone here is so much more smarter than me because I took so long to understand the material that we were learning.
I over thought a lot and i ultimately failed two practical exams because of that.
Now that’s not the point but what I’m trying to say is in the first year everyone will be trying to do their best from the start. And even before the course starts.
Everyone is so competitive as you all try and find your place in the cohort.
It sounds quite bad but physios are quite competitive people.
This can be a good and bad thing.
However you quickly realise that nobody really knows as much as they say they do and grades don’t tend to matter all that much. It took me until after doing the degree to realise this..
In the first year you’ll be basically building your foundation for your practice. So the modules you study will mainly be geared around learning anatomy, functional testing of limbs, muscle power testing, measuring range of movement, how to perform correct auscultations, the active cycle of breathing, positioning of patients, learning about neurological disorders.
Basically just arming your physio toolbox so you can have something to treat a patient with. This hopefully will build your confidence, especially after you go out on placement.
Your 1st placement will probably be in an area such as MSK OP, Elderly care or Resipratory but that’s rare. I wouldn’t expect a first placement to be in neuro as this is more complex.
You’ll see how things are done in the real world and it will help boost your competency.
Your first year will go fast and you will wonder where it all went. It’s the best year for breaking into uni life and doing things you enjoy like hobbies, socialising and exploring the city you’re in.
Make sure you enjoy it because the 2nd and 3rd year will definitely be a step up in terms of intensity!!
Hope you gained some value from this video!!
