Types of Rubber Band Braces

There are several types of rubber band braces namely; triangle rubber bands, class 2 elastic, class 3 elastic, cross elastic, anterior elastic, Box rubber bands, interarch rubber bands, open bite elastics, ligature, and elastic separator.

Triangle rubber bands; are v-shaped and their purpose is to fix the position of the canines.

Class 2 elastic; their purpose is to fix class 2 div 1 malocclusion, anterior open bite, and midline deviation.

Class 3 elastic; they help push forward when one or more upper teeth are towards the inside.

Cross elastic; used to fix crossbite. It is connected to the teeth in the same jaw to fix a tooth out of place.

Anterior elastics; fixes the deep bite or overbite and the distance between the front teeth.

Box rubber bands; work to close the gap between teeth.

Interarch rubber bands; are used to connect the brackets of the two arches.

How they are used depends on their role in the treatment.

Open bite elastics; are needed to fix open bites.

Ligature; used to hold the brackets in place and gives the option to make the braces colorful.

Elastic separator; needed to create the required space between the teeth.

What do rubber bands do for braces?

Rubber bands are used to increase the force that’s applied to a specific area of your mouth. You may also see them referred to as elastics.

Rubber bands connect to the brackets on your braces and can be positioned in many different conformations. They’re attached and secured using small metal hooks on the bracket.

There are several things that rubber bands do for braces. They’re often used to help adjust different types of misaligned jaw, such as:

overbite
underbite
open bite
crossbite

They may also be used with braces to help adjust spacing between teeth or to adjust the positioning of teeth, such as helping to straighten a tooth that’s leaning backward.

When do you start wearing rubber bands for braces?

When you begin using rubber bands with your braces depends on your specific treatment plan. For some, rubber bands may be used after a few adjustments. For others, they may be used closer to the end of treatment and for others they are not part of your treatment!

Additionally, not everyone will need to wear rubber bands with their braces. Your dentist will let you know if rubber bands are a part of your treatment plan.
