17 On-Set Secrets from The Golden Girls
The Golden Girl is an American sitcom created by Susan Harris. It spanned about seven seasons, which were originally aired on NBC from September 14, 1985, to May 9, 1992. The television series follows the lives of four older women living together in Miami, Florida. It follows an ensemble cast starring Beatrice Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Betty White as Rose Nylund, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo.
The Golden Girls was a hit right from the first episode to the last. The first episode topped the Nielson rankings when it premiered, and the series finale, which originally aired in May 1992, grossed 27.2 million views. The show came to an end when Bea Arthur chose to leave as she felt that the show's quality was on a decline. Even though it's been 18 years since the season finale, many around the world still love the show and continue to binge-watch. The sitcom has made a strong comeback recently - more than 11 million hours of The Golden Girls were streamed on Hulu in April 2020.
Other than enjoying mass viewership, The Golden Girls also received much critical acclaim. The four stars received an Emmy Award each for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The show is a two-time winner of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and a three-time winner of Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy.
