How Earth Becomes a Flat Map — Mercator Projection Explained #MercatorProjection #WorldMap
Have you ever wondered how a round Earth becomes
a flat map? This animation explains the Mercator
Projection — one of the most used and most
misunderstood maps in history.
Watch as the Earth globe is sliced into vertical
segments like an orange, peeled apart, flattened,
and assembled into the flat world map we all
grew up with.
The Mercator Projection preserves shapes and
angles — making it perfect for navigation —
but severely distorts the size of countries,
especially near the poles. This is why Greenland
appears as large as Africa on most maps, even
though Africa is 14 times bigger in reality.
🌍 What you will learn:
— Why maps cannot be perfectly accurate
— How the globe is projected onto a flat surface
— What the Mercator Projection gets right
— What the Mercator Projection gets wrong
— Why it became the world standard for navigation
This concept was originally explained as part
of a geography course by Emarin Norway, modeled
and animated by Grafonaut.
