New App for Omarchy OS – Convert MP4 & HEVC Files for DaVinci Resolve (Free Tool)
In this Linux Out of the Box episode, I show the new ProRap app I wrote for Omarchy OS — a simple, free tool that converts your camera footage (MP4, HEVC, or H.265) into ProRes-compatible files that work perfectly in DaVinci Resolve Free.
If you’ve ever tried importing H.265 or AAC audio into Resolve and got no video, no waveform, or missing audio, this app fixes that instantly.

🔹 What’s Covered in This Video
• Installing DaVinci Resolve Free on Omarchy OS using my updated script.
• Installing and launching ProRap, the conversion tool.
• Testing with three common file types:
• ✅ AV1 + PCM – works natively in Resolve.
• ⚠️ HEVC + PCM – no picture in Resolve Free.
• ❌ HEVC + AAC – no video or audio in Resolve Free.
• Using ProRap to batch convert incompatible files to ProRes LT (recommended).
• Keeping original file names or adding suffixes for easy organization.
• How to select individual clips or whole folders for conversion.
• Where converted files are saved and how to reimport them into Resolve.
• Verifying your output with MediaInfo GUI.
• Demonstrating the converted clips playing correctly in Resolve with working waveforms.
⸻
💡 Why ProRap Exists
DaVinci Resolve Free on Linux doesn’t include licensed codecs like H.264, H.265, or AAC — meaning most camera footage won’t import.
The ProRap App solves this problem:
• Converts MP4s and HEVC files to ProRes LT, a lightweight, edit-ready format.
• Maintains quality while fixing codec compatibility.
• Uses FFmpeg under the hood for fast, efficient transcoding.
• Provides a graphical interface — no terminal commands required.
• Designed specifically for Linux users working in Resolve Free.
⸻
🔹 ProRap Features
• 🧩 Batch convert single clips or whole folders.
• 🎚️ Choose ProRes 422, LT, HQ, or Proxy.
• 💾 Output to any directory with custom suffix naming.
• ⚙️ Optimized defaults for Resolve Free workflows.
• 🪶 Lightweight, written with Omarchy users in mind.
• 🔒 Safe — converts via FFmpeg in a sandboxed process.
⸻
🧠 Tips for Best Results
• Use ProRes LT for general camera footage — it balances file size and quality.
• Use Proxy mode if you’re editing large projects on lower-end systems.
• Always check your Resolve scaling setting: Preferences → User → UI Scale 150% for readable text.
• For Resolve Studio users, you can skip this step — Studio handles H.265 and AAC natively.
⸻
⚠️ Compatibility Notes
• Works with NVIDIA GPU setups (tested on RTX 5060 Ti).
• May need tweaks for AMD / Intel systems — feedback welcome!
• Designed for desktop systems; laptops may vary by driver.
• Converts to ProRes-compatible MOV files — not licensed Apple ProRes, but fully recognized by Resolve.
⸻
💬 Why It Matters
Linux users have always faced codec issues in Resolve Free — and endlessly converting clips in the terminal is tedious. ProRap gives you a GUI, a clean workflow, and reliable results.
If you shoot on mirrorless or drone cameras that record in H.265, this app is a must-have.
