OROPHARYNGEAL AIRWAY INSERTION PROCEDURE | OPA | Artificial Airway | Oral Airway | Airway adjuncts.
An oropharyngeal airway is an airway adjunct used to maintain
or open the airway by stopping the tongue from covering the epiglottis.
Mainly used to prevent the obstruction of the airway by the tongue and epiglottis
Patient who are unconscious with no cough or gag reflex,insert an OPA or NPA to maintain the airway patency.
OPA-USES
To maintain open airway
To prevent ET Tube occlusion
To prevent tongue bite
To facilitate suction & sampling

OPA- Disadvantages
Easily dislodges from the mouth
Incorrect size of OPA, can push tongue back and occlude airway
Not recommended for head or facial trauma patients.
Not tolerated by conscious patients, stimulates gag reflex

There are two external facial measurements to select the size of OPA
The OPA is sized by measuring from the
Centre of the mouth (incisors) to the angle of the jaw
(edge of the mandible).
Corner/angle of the mouth to the earlobe.

OPA-NURSING ALERTS
In case if the mouth is difficulty to open ?
In case if the patient is Conscious or semi-conscious ?
In case if the patient is gagging or vomiting ?
In case if the OPA is small or big?
