Today we will learn from animators. They have wonderful gestural abilities and are able to take simplification of the pose to an extreme. They bring everything back to the overall action.

Even if you are not making an animation, you can add so much to your life drawings by developing this ability to 'draw the verb'.

We look at some of the ideas in the book Drawn to Life by Walt Stanchfield and try to apply them to our life drawings.

Figuary is a 28 day Figure Drawing Challenge that we do throughout February every year together with Croquis Cafe.

We at Love Life Drawing provide a series of tutorials like this one and live sessions to help you improve your technical skills. Tutorials will come out on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout February! Live sessions are every Wednesday and Sunday.

Croquis Cafe will provide life model reference videos for you to practise your skills everyday. It’s a powerful combination and many people have credited Figuary in past years with kickstarting or accelerating their life drawing progress.

There is a community area (link above) where you can share your drawings with fellow artists (see link above), plus you can use the #figuary21 on Instagram.

Tutorial series:
This year we are bringing you a series of 10 lessons, so it’s more like a mini-course than just quick tips. We have collaborated with life drawing teacher Scott Breton and wonderful artist Andriy Vynogradov to bring you a powerful sequence of exercises designed to build your figure quick sketch skills.

Week 1 – the surprisingly simple anatomy you need to tackle the figure in a quick sketch plus the first exercise – the Block In.
Week 2 – the second exercise – Designing Long Lines, plus we will learn about Designing Big Shapes.
Week 3 – Gestural Mark Making.
Week 4 – Learning from the extraordinary artist Andriy Vynogradov (aka @vynillus).
Lessons will come out every Tuesday and Thursday, plus in week 1 there will be extra videos on Monday 1st and Saturday 6th. They will be posted on our YouTube channel.

Live sessions:
In the Figuary Live Sessions, which will be on our website and not on Youtube (go to the Figuary 2021 page linked above), we will look at the poses you’ve been drawing we'll give feedback on people’s drawings from the community area, plus we will have various artist guests. Our live sessions are always fun and relaxed, so I hope you’ll join us!
