In this week's reboot, our patient presented with the primary concern of a large gap between the two front teeth. In dentistry, we refer to this gap as a diastema. An important feature of her diastema was the frenum, which refers to a common tissue attachment between the lip and the gums. During orthodontic space closure, fibrous tissue compression, in this area, led to an unsightly swelling. The patient decided to proceed with a procedure call a laser frenectomy to remove the frenal tissues. Aside from the improved appearance of the smile, the removal of the fibrous tissues can improve the stability of the space closure. ⁠
