가사

주과포혜(酒菓哺醯) 박전(薄奠)하나, 만사(萬事)를 모두 잊고, 많이 먹고 돌아가오. 무덤을 검쳐 안고, 아이고 여보 마누라, 날 버리고 어디 가오. 마누라는 나를 잊고 북망산천(北邙山川) 들어가, 송죽(松竹)으로 울을 삼고, 두견(杜鵑)이 벗이 되니, 나를 잊고 누웠으나, 내 신세를 어이하리. 노이무처(老而無妻) 환부(鰥夫)라니, 사궁중(四宮中)에 첫 머리요, 아들없고 눈 못보니, 몇가지 궁(窮) 이 되단 말가. 무덤을 검쳐 안고, 내려 둥굴 치 둥굴며, 함께 죽기로만 작정을 한다.

Though simple offerings of wine, sweets, rice, and vinegar are placed upon the grave, I forget all worldly matters and eat my fill before returning home.
Embracing the grave, I cry out
‘Oh, my dear wife, where have you gone, leaving me behind?’
She has left me and entered the mountains of the afterlife,
wrapped in a fence of pine and bamboo,
with the cuckoo as her only friend.
Though she lies there forgetting me, what am I to do with my miserable life?

To be an old man without a wife – a widower –
is said to be the most sorrowful of the four great sufferings.
No son to carry on my name, no sight left in my eyes
how many griefs have come upon me?

I embrace the grave once more,
rolling on the ground in anguish,
and swear that I shall die with her.
