March 24th, 1989.
Just after midnight, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Alaska’s Prince William Sound.
What followed was an environmental disaster.
Nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into the ocean.
The oil spread across hundreds of miles of coastline.
Wildlife was devastated.
Thousands of sea otters, birds, and marine animals died.
Cleanup efforts lasted for years — and some areas still show traces of oil decades later.
The disaster led to major changes in U.S. environmental law, including stricter regulations on oil transport.
It also reshaped public awareness of environmental risk.
The Exxon Valdez spill became a symbol of how fragile ecosystems can be — and how quickly they can be damaged.
Follow Yesterday Now for more moments that changed the environment.
