Tobias Fischer ICRA 2025 Keynote "Place Recognition: Navigate Without GPS Using Bio-Inspiration"
This is a recording of my keynote talk at the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
Abstract: Knowing your location has long been fundamental to robotics and has driven major technological advances from industry to academia. Despite significant research advances, critical challenges to enduring deployment remain, including deploying these advances on resource-constrained robots and providing robust localisation capabilities in GPS-denied challenging environments such as underwater. This talk explores Visual Place Recognition (VPR), which is the ability to recognise previously visited locations using only visual data. I will demonstrate how energy-efficient neuromorphic approaches using event-based cameras and spiking neural networks can provide low-power edge devices with location information with superior energy efficiency, adaptability, and data efficiency. Driven by the same principles of efficiency and robustness, we have also developed novel deep learning approaches that significantly reduce costly annotation effort by marine scientists for coral and seagrass segmentation. I will demonstrate how we use these approaches to enable automated coral re-seeding and long-term ecological monitoring as part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program in collaboration with the Australian Institute for Marine Sciences.
