The Uncanny and The Monster: Why "Psycho" is One of the Best Comebacks of 2019

"PSYCHO."

An excerpt from the essay I wrote for my postmodernism media class about monster theory in contemporary art. "The uncanny" is, theoretically, the feeling of being haunted by a memory, encountering something that takes on the feeling of aching familiarity, instead of just being mysterious or creepy. Jeffrey Jerome Cohen is a monster theorist who studies why monsters appear when and where they do, and what they say about a work and its culture. "Psycho" manifests elements of both, and delivers a layered, hopefully message, rather than an easy, generic music video. That's why I'm calling it one of the best comebacks of the year, and arguably of their career.
