Precautions to prevent ectopic pregnancy. Limit the number of sexual partners, use condoms, if you are suffering from sexually transmitted diseases, go to a doctor and take treatment, if a woman has undergone tubal recanalization surgery and she is planning to conceive the woman should be carefully explained that if she misses her periods she should come immediately and do regular follow up with serum beta hCG and regular scanning. A woman who has undergone tubal recanalization, if she is planning to conceive, the doctor should explain to her properly that she should report immediately to the hospital if she misses her periods. Serial beta hCG and serial regular scanning has to be done. So that we can pick up an early ectopic pregnancy, which can be managed medically with methotrexate rather than undergoing surgery. Avoid smoking and alcohol, and if a woman is taking fertility drugs to conceive, make sure that her tubes are patent and if she is not willing for tubal tests, explain to her the same thing that she has to come to the hospital that as soon as she misses her periods she has to come to the hospital or as soon as her pregnancy test is positive. If a woman has intrauterine contraceptive device then she has to go for regular check-ups for 6 months to rule out expulsions or descends which can lead to ectopic pregnancy. If a woman gives previous history of ectopic pregnancy please check the other tube that there is no swelling, clumping or bleeding by the regular hysterosalpingography give treatment for that problem also. If there is a history of genital tuberculosis always see the tubal patency before you give the fertility drugs. Emergency contraceptive pills when used can also delay the travelling of fertilised egg from the fallopian tube to the uterus, thereby causing an ectopic pregnancy. That is why correct birth control measures have to be followed in order to prevent this problem. Women who have undergone recurrent abortions in the past or recurrent D & C’s should always discuss with their doctor they are not conceiving in spite of using the fertility drugs.
