Each printer manufacturer lists their own papers only as standard media settings. i.e. Epson’s two most common media settings are Premium Luster and Velvet Fine Art. Canon’s are Photo Paper Pro Platinum and Heavyweight Fine Art paper. Some of the smaller desktop Canon printers use Other Fine Art Paper 1 for fine art matte papers.
The media setting controls how much ink is squirted on to the paper and what type of black ink if there is a choice in the printer. It can also define, depending on the printer, how much of a forced border the paper might require, if the printer will support borderless printing on a specific paper type, (if a roll printer) if the media will support automatic cutting or not.
The media setting is not a profile or ICC color profile. The easy answer is, if a paper is glossy or luster (has a shine to it) use a Photo Black media setting such as Epson Premium Luster or Canon Photo Paper Pro Platinum. Photo Black ink is designed specifically for use on these types of papers.
If a paper is matte and has no shine, use a Matte Black media setting such as Velvet Fine Art or Premium Presentation Mate in the case of Epson or Heavy Weight Fine Art Paper, Highest Density Fine Art paper or Other Fine Art Paper 1 in the case of Canon. If someone is using a paper from a major manufacturer such as Canson, Hahnemuhle or Moab go to their website and see the ICC downloads page. Plug in the brand of printer the customer is using and the printer name. They will usually state what the appropriate media setting is to use for that printer.
