Wetlands drainage and White Nile water canal projects: Egypt's disastrous plan
#JongleiCanal #SuddWetland #MacharWetland #Ethiopia #southsudan
The revival of the Jonglei Canal Project, a half-completed engineering megaproject, is posing a threat to the Sudd wetland and could turn it into a desert.
The Jonglei Canal is a 386-kilometer water canal project to divert water from the Sudd wetland and send it to Egypt.
The controversial Jonglei Canal Project was activated in 1978, by the government of former President Jaafar Mohammed Nimeiri of Sudan and was set for implementation without any scientific study of the environmental, economic and social impacts of the project on the people of South Sudan.
Egypt’s plan to drain vast wetlands is not limited to the Sudd wetland; its former Irrigation minister has hinted the possibility of draining a similar freshwater ecosystem – the Machar wetland – which is located at the border between Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Protection of the Machar wetland and other wetlands found in the Baro-Akobo-Sobat Subbasin (BAS) is essential; and the sooner it’s done, the better.
