"Prologue" + "Bikini Bottom Day" Animatic | The SpongeBob Musical (FINISHED)

PSA: PLEASE stop asking why Gary's a cat, lmao. Why are they humans living underwater? Why are they humans named SpongeBob and Squidward? IT'S AN AU. I know that Gary's a snail in the musical, but in my interpretation, he's a cat. Read some of the facts below for more information on this.

Remember about a week or 2 ago, in the description for the WIP, I said I wasn’t sure if I was gonna finish this? hAH.

-watch this a few times and look at different characters each time because I PUT TOO MUCH WORK INTO THINGS, NEEDLESSLY
-i worked on this on-and-off for a few months, stopped, then came back to it
-you can actually tell when I came back to it cause the art quality has changed, however slightly (started again at Pat singing “my favorite rock”)
-at first I was afraid to draw the characters really cartoony and deviate from my style comfort zone (you can tell from SB’s early profiles) but I threw those precautions out the window when I picked this back up and I’m actually pretty proud of it! (try new things, kids)
-i intended for this to be like a complete human AU (hence Gary the Cat and the jellyfish butterflies when sb leaves his house) but then I said f it and drew some mf clams as bg vocalists
--but i will continue to draw Gary as a poorly-drawn cat uNTIL THE DAY I DIE
-kinda upset with how I drew Patrick, couldn’t really get him right (i promise to do him justice later on down the road)
-sandy is probably the least recognizable but that’s because I kinda wanted to make her look a little more like her cartoon design (buns as ears, gap in teeth, wearing a bikini under her suit) but I plan on having her appear closer to her musical design down the road. But for now, think of her as having two outfits, the one for her treedome (which is just her hair in buns and her jumpsuit tied around her waist) and her jumpsuit on (afro and all)
-i went overboard with sandy’s part and then, like an idiot, was like “gUEsS i gOTtA DO thAt foR EVerYONE noW”
-SORRY FOR KRABS' WALKING LMAO
--also he looks like a bearded danny phantom lol

-----just a lotta Ls were taken with Krabs, okay??
-some bg fish from the musical are featured, can you spot them all?
-i know that, like, the line-thickness for krabs and pearl change in the middle of their scene. I was too lazy to fix it when I first noticed it so I vowed to do it later, but here we are
-the part where the blob-crowd bursts thru the door simultaneously cracks me up and makes me cringe, but I had to pick my drawing battles and I was willing to lose that one to save me some time (rip)
-i spent way too long on frames that are shown for like, half a second, and will probably continue to do so because, as stated previously, I’m an idiot
-total frames (including title and credits but not the repetition of the same frames): 362

I use backgrounds from the actual cartoon as I’m an amateur artist and I struggle with bgs a lot. I do try to add some subtle differences, but the bgs are not completely original nor do I claim them to be!

Character designs are inspired by the cartoon (Nickelodeon and my guy Stephen Hillenburg) and the musical (Chicago and Broadway performances)
