This Fortress Disappears With the Tide Every 12 Hours #montsaintmichel #medieval #construction

Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France looks like something from fantasy — but its real history is even crazier.

Originally founded in 966 AD, this medieval abbey was built on a rocky tidal island surrounded by some of the fastest-rising tides in Europe. During high tide, the entire island becomes isolated from the mainland, turning it into a natural fortress for centuries. 🌊

Builders somehow managed to construct massive Gothic structures on top of steep rock using medieval tools, narrow ramps, and primitive lifting systems.

Over time, Mont Saint-Michel survived wars, sieges, collapsing foundations, violent tides, and centuries of erosion — yet it still stands almost exactly where it began more than 1,000 years ago.

At certain times of year, the tide moves so fast it can surround the island within hours.

Medieval engineering.
Impossible location.
One of the most surreal places on Earth.
