Pieces of Berlin: Florian Reischauer, JM Stim and Eric Jarosinski

Deutsches Haus at NYU presents a discussion and photo slideshow with Berlin-based Austrian photographer Florian Reischauer on his book Pieces of Berlin 2009-2013, in conversation with author and journalist JM Stim, and moderated by Professor Eric Jarosinski aka @NeinQuarterly.

“For most young people around the world, the German capital today has become a focal point of the contemporary hip and cool. Yet beyond the neo-bohemian gloss of the virtually infinite nightlife, and the creative class' sleekness in myriads of galleries and art spaces, lies the other, the ‘normal’ Berlin. And it is this still rather poor, staggeringly ordinary city that has become the obsession of photographer Florian Reischauer, a long-standing Berlin resident.

In his blog ‘Pieces of Berlin' (http://www.piecesofberlin.com/), Reischauer has been his publishing his own, unique perspective on one of the world's most interesting and marvelous cities and its inhabitants since 2010. Approaching them with a restrained attitude and relying on the incorruptible view of his analogue vintage camera, the artist attempts to lay out and capture a profile of Berlin's everyday life in its entirety, documenting both the hustle and bustle as well as the constant transformation of this exciting metropolis. For the viewer, this allows a new, different and unexpected angle to look at a city we all seem to know so well.”

Florian Reischauer (b. 1985) is an Austrian photographer and blogger based in Berlin. For the past five years he has been working on the blog 'Pieces of Berlin', attempting to capture Berlin's everyday life. In 2013, a solo exhibition of the project was shown at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Berlin, and a book of the same name has just been published. More info: http://www.piecesofberlin.com/

JM Stim is a writer and a journalist who lives and works in Manhattan. In Central Europe the former war correspondent and sports writer became known as the founder and publisher of acclaimed political magazine DATUM and for writing the seminal biography "Despite Everything", which covers the life of Austro-Jewish publishing icon Oscar Bronner. His recent work "Here is Berlin", a book-length essay on the German capital, has been translated into four languages. More info: http://www.jmstim.com

Prof. Eric Jarosinski is the writer and editor of @NeinQuarterly, a "Compendium of Utopian Negation" on Twitter. With a focus on German philosophy, language, literature, and culture, @NeinQuarterly has been met with critical acclaim and garnered a broad international following. Jarosinski has recently made his exit from academia to embark upon a new career as an aphorist, #failedintellectual, and cultural critic at large.
