डायनासोर,
एक ऐसी भयानक प्रजाति जिसने आज से 243 मिलीयन साल पहले triassic काल में जन्म लिया और cretaceous काल, जो कि आज से 66 मिलीयन साल पहले खत्म हुआ था, उसके अंत तक अस्तित्व में रहे । डायनासोरो ने हमारी पृथ्वी पर करीब 16 करोड़ सालों तक एकछत्र राज किया । डायनासोर रेप्टाइल्स या रेंगने वाले जानवरों के ग्रुप से संबंध रखते थे। डायनासोर शब्द का प्रयोग सबसे पहले 1842 में सर रिचर्ड अोवेन के द्वारा किया गया। जिसका शाब्दिक अर्थ होता है एक “भयानक छिपकली” । आज से अरबो साल पहले पृथ्वी पर केवल इन्हीं विशालकाय और दैत्यकार जींवो का बोलबाला था।
उस समय डायनासोर पृथ्वी के हर महाद्वीप पर 1500 से ज्यादा प्रजातियों के साथ निवास करते थे । इसमें से कुछ प्रजातियां शाकाहारी थी तो अधिकतर मांसाहारी ही थी । डायनासोर चलने और भागने के लिए चार पैरों का उपयोग करते थे , लेकिन डायनासोरों की बहुत सी प्रजातियां ऐसी भी थी जो केवल दो पैरों का ही उपयोग करते थे । इतिहास में 40 मीटर लंबे और 18 मीटर ऊंचे विशालकाय डायनासोर के अवशेष भी मिले हैं । डायनासोर अपने समय के सबसे विशालकाय जानवर थे , लेकिन आपको यह जानकर आश्चर्य होगा कि उस युग में भी डायनासोर की कुछ प्रजातियां मात्र 50 सेंटीमीटर तक लंबी हुआ करती थी । लेकिन 66 मिलीयन साल पहले जब पृथ्वी पर मनुष्य जाति का उदय भी नहीं हुआ था , तब इन विशालकाय जींवो के साथ कुछ ऐसा हुआ जिसकी वजह से डायनासोरों का अस्तित्व ही समाप्त हो गया ।

Dinosaurs ruled for a little over 16 million years on our earth. Dinosaurs belonged to the group of reptiles or creeping animals. The term dinosaur was first used by Sir Richard Owen in 1842.
