Making skis in the wilderness | MONGOLIA

In the snowy plains of northern Mongolia live the Tsaatan nomads. To cross certain areas of the mountain, they need skis.

The skis are carved with an axe from a birch trunk, the easiest wood to work. It takes a day to make a pair of rudimentary skis. The wood is first heated, then steamed, heated again and so on. The skis are put under tension to give curvature to the tip.

Follow each step of the making by watching the video!
