“Up Helly Aa” - the Shetland Islands’ Viking festival is the world’s largest fire festival. Once a year in the UK's northern-most archipelago, about a thousand men dress up as Vikings to roam through the town of Lerwick. The tradition dates from the 9th century, when the islands were conquered by the Vikings of old. Alongside their celebrated connection to their Scandinavian roots, the Shetland Islands are renowned for their robust ponies and beautiful, rugged landscapes.
