I Almost Died

Story time: So I had been out of the commercial game for a few years, and came back for a couple months of work. This was the second dive of the trip.. roughly 170fsw. Get down there, pop two scamp, and everything is goin' good.. then the mistakes start.

First mistake, not stoning the big hogfish and the gag. Bad shot placement wastes valuable bottom time. Second mistake, putting my stringer so way away from the action.. but I did that so it would be a waypoint that led me back to my ascent line. Then instead of looking for my fish with spears in them, I got distracted lineshafting all the other good fish around there. It really was a meaty spot (some badass captain put me on it). Needless to say, I was narced AF. My dumbass decided.. instead of ascending with 1000psi (where everything would've been fine), I was going to A) shoot ANOTHER scamp and B) then go find my shafts. You can see it when I look at my computer around 10:00 in the video.

At the end there, when I realized I wasn't getting that shaft out of the cave, I left my gun and everything.. and ascended from 170fsw with 500psi, and a major deco obligation. I remember that tank breathing tight around 50-60 feet.. and praying that I'd get to see my baby girls again. I ascended as slow as I could, did whatever sort of miniscule deco I could.. then popped the surface screaming for the O2 bottle. Thankfully, Jerry was Johnny on the spot, and brought the pony right over, and I slipped back down, did my deco.. and extra deco.

When I got out of the water I had no symptoms.. thankfully. I got lucky.. real lucky. Haven't screwed up like that since. Don't be stupid like me. Fish greed is real.. and it'll kill your ass. If Jerry wasn't there right away, and hadn't responded so quickly.. who knows what would've happened.
