Roberta Flack was born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, and raised in Arlington, Virginia. A musical prodigy, she began playing the piano at age nine and excelled in classical training. She earned a music scholarship to Howard University at just 15, becoming one of the youngest students ever enrolled there. At Howard, she majored in piano but also nurtured her vocal talent. After graduation, Flack taught music in Washington, D.C., while performing evenings in clubs. Her performances were soulful, intimate, and emotionally powerful, attracting local attention. One night, jazz musician Les McCann heard her and was so impressed that he helped her land an audition with Atlantic Records.
