Making an Edison style metallic soap blank cylinder in 2018

This video shows the basic production of our brown "wax" cylinders. You will find it is a metallic soap. Wax cylinders were only natural wax for a brief time in mid 1888. By late 1888, a metallic soap was agreed upon, and a few problems arose in early 1889 with formula 957 which used oleic acid as the temper, by fall of 1889, ceresin replaced the oleic acid in the cylinders. The Edison Phonograph Works made the compound for many years, first for commercial cylinders and then for home recording blanks after 1902, sold as late as the 1920's.
