Strip Paint From Wood With an Infrared Paint Remover

Stripping paint from wood without chemicals using Speedheater Cobra. Removing paint from wood is never an easy chore. Lead paint dust and chips are a concern.

I had lead paint that was chipping and starting to come off in small sheets down to the wood. Covering up the wood with aluminum was an option, however, I live in a humid climate. The wood would have to be sealed up prior to covering it up.

I explored many options, chemical paint removers. Too dangerous, time consuming and messy for me. I looked at paint shavers, but misuse can cause damage to wood and they only work on large flat surfaces. One of these shavers would be hard to hold above my head to remove paint from my porch beams.

I settled on Speedheater's Cobra hand held Infrared heater to remove the paint. While it only heated a 3.75" x 3.75" inch area, it only weighs 1lb 5 oz. I found that it quickly heated up many coats of paint that could be scraped off quickly. There were no little paint chips to stick to the bottom of my shoes. There were small chunks of paint which landed on my tarp. I could pick up the tarp and quickly slide the chunks of paint into a plastic bag.
