At 4:20pm on July 17th, 2014, a Boeing 777-200 with the Malaysia Airlines nationality and registration mark 9M-MRD disappeared from air traffic control systems to the west of the TAMAK air navigation waypoint in Ukraine. Moments later, pieces of the aircraft fell from the sky, peppering the ground in a fifty square kilometer swath near the Ukrainian villages of Hrabove, Rozsypne, and Petropavlivka in Donetsk Oblast.
