Today we’re taking a look at a super tasty lick played by the king of Instagram guitar - Mateus Asato. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years and hadn’t heard of Mateus up until now, the guy is fast becoming one of the most inspirational players of our generation. He rose to fame by posting clips of his incredible playing to instagram where he has amassed over 1M followers. As an in-demand touring guitar player, Mateus has performed worldwide with the likes of Tori Kelly, Jessie J and Bruno Mars. One of my all-time favourite players for sure!

This lick is a very creative use of 6th’s within the major scale that ascends the fretboard.

In this video, I teach you how to play Mateus’ lick note by note with TAB and I also break down the theory behind it, so that you can take that knowledge and use it to develop similar licks of your own.

In addition to the above, I demonstrate three approaches you could take to really make this lick your own, including the use of odd-note groupings, playing 6th’s on different pairs of strings and combining odd and even note groupings.
