NISHANT JAIN, HINDI MEDIUM TOPPER AT UPSC

The video begins with an introduction clip of Nishant Jain  by Drishti exceutive editor (media) Shri Amrit Upadhyaya. Nishant is seen studying in his home and you can see various books (such as Gora, White Tiger and others) decorating his study. We see his family members sitting with him; Nishant is from Meerut and always had dreams of doing something big in life. Anchoring, debates, poetry writing were some of the hobbies that Nishant excelled at during his formative educational years. The video shows newspaper clips, magazines where Nishant had published. He studied in government (sarkari) schools. His brother Prashant Jain also praises him in the introduction of this UPSC Hindi medium topper (and later his bhabhi also recounts the wonderful day when the UPSC final results were published). Nishant moved to Delhi in 2012 after completing his M.A. education in Meerut. He also did part-time jobs during preparation years when needed.
FAILED PT IN FIRST ATTEMPT

He was not successful in UPSC prelims exam in his first attempt but he did not give up. He got selected in Lok Sabha Secretariat for a Hindi language role (sahayak, assistant) and in the very next year he was in the list of successful candidates at UPSC civil services (IAS) examination.
WANTED TO BE ADHIKARI (IAS OFFICER)

Nishant says that he wanted (a sort of fantasy) to be an officer since class 7th or 8th; when he would read papers (or visit the nearby stores) he would read about works of ‘adhikaris’ in newspapers. And that planted the seed in his mind. When he grew up then he realized that one has to go through exam (civil services or state service exam) to become a adhikari (civil servant).
ADHIKARI- POST CIVIL SERVICES TRAINING

When asked what changes he sees after the training (now that he has become a civil servant), Nishant, Hindi medium UPSC topper, says the IAS training (at LBSNAA or Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration with attached district training etc.)is such that you get exposure on all aspects of life. The foundation course (FC), district training, Bharat Darshan (All India tour for civil servants) exposes candidates to India and the world and suitably sensitises them to subtleties of administration. Patience, development of the sense of good and bad, everyday administration ideas are some of the positives after training. ‘How army, air, navy forces, paramilitary forces work in Naxal affected areas?, how private sector or NGOs work?’ are some other additions to knowledge as an IAS officer undergoes various attachments during the training for IAS officers, says Nishant about his training experience.
+2 IN COMMERCE; B.A.-HISTORY, POLITICAL SCIENCE, ENGLISH

When asked about his diverse subjects at education preceding the UPSC attempts, he says it was not deliberate (his elder brother was also from commerce). He took those subjects in B.A. as he liked them. He did study Hindi later and took Hindi literature as an optional in the UPSC civil services examination. For his love of Hindi language, Nishant recites his first Hindi poem he had written in his childhood (Pehli baarish- First Rain: Chunnu munnu…pyara sa mausam aaya, garam pakodi khane ko hai man lalchaya; see the video for the whole poem by the Hindi IAS topper).

DECIDING THE OPTIONAL SUBJECT, CONTENT SELECTION

Nishant, who took Hindi literature (sahitya)as optional at the UPSC exam, says that for optional subject selection at mains exam: make sure you are familiar with it, that you got interest in it, and that whether there is enough study material. For newspapers’ studies, he says that newspapers are a compulsory part of UPSC preparation. If you can understand the Hindu then good and fine; and do not read the whole newspapers, read it as per point of view of UPSC (for example, govt projects, first page etc. are important). You slowly develop the instinct to know what to study for upsc exam and what to leave. He also recommends a monthly magazine for UPSC exam preparation (Nishant himself wrote in Drishti Current affairs today, Hindi magazine published by Drishti publications).Hindi IAS topper Nishant says that concentration is rare in this world due to social media and in
