Asbestos play sand 'low-risk' messaging not independently verified

Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy believes regulators need to “at least be probing the edges” of the testing process to ensure it was satisfactory.

Safety assurances given to the Australian and New Zealand public over asbestos in children’s play sand products are under scrutiny after it was revealed they were initially drawn from a supplier’s own risk assessment that wasn’t independently verified.

It comes weeks after Auckland University of Technology published results from a world-first study – led by Associate Professor Terri-Ann Berry – which tested samples of several sand products and confirmed asbestos was present and airborne fibres could be released during play.
