Sinn Diving Watch U1 S E U-Boat Steel/Tegiment/Hard Black (U1 S E) Luxury Watch Review

Constructed of German U-Boat steel and hardened further with Sinn's Tegiment carbon diffusion process, the final enhancement of this aggressive Sinn dive watch occurs when a hard black DLC coating is applied over the Tegimented U Boat steel.

Sinn applies a number of its proprietary technologies to the U1 SE. First, U Boat steel is heavier and more resistant to corrosion than conventional watch industry 316L stainless steel; it is on par with Rolex 904L stainless steel alloy. Second, Sinn uses a kolsterizing process known as "Tegiment" to increase the hardness of the U Boat steel from 350 Vickers to 1,200 Vickers. Finally a diamond-like-carbon coating is applied to the Tegimented U Boat steel.

Sinn Spezialuhren of Frankfurt is a specialist in the creation of sports watches for professional applications. While generally associated with pilot's watches, Sinn has manufactured the capable U1 dive watch since 2005. Its "captive bezel" is a diving bezel with unidirectional action and a unique screw-fixed mounting that is more robust than snap-fit diving bezels from Omega and Rolex.

The U1 SE of 2016 differs from the standard U1 in its black coating, beige dial and bezel features, and grey seconds hand. All links and the diving clasp of the U1 are built by Sinn at its Glashutte case and bracelet factory, and they feature both Tegimented steel and Hard Black coating. The diving clasp is secured by a clamshell lock and includes a dive extension for use over wet suit or dry suit.

Each Sinn U1 and U1 SE is powered by a Sellita SW-200-1 automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve, a 28,800 vph beat rate, 26 jewels, and both stop seconds (hacking) and a quick-set date. This Swiss automatic caliber is comparably tough when compared against Omega and Rolex dive watch movements but can be serviced by any local watchmaker rather than the trained specialists required to service modern Omega and Rolex movements.

The Sinn Diving Watch U1 S E features a 44mm black-PVD coated stainless steel case surrounding a black dial on a black-PVD coated steel bracelet with a stainless steel deployant buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds and date. The watch also measures 14.5mm in thickness and 51mm from lug-to-lug.
