Marta's bio:

Praised for her “warm lyricism and flawless technique” by Le soir (Belgium) and for her “gripping performance of music by Grażyna Bacewicz” by The Washington Post, Polish-American violinist, Marta Szlubowska is a sought-after soloist, chamber musician, teacher and a concertmaster. Her concerts have taken her to over 15 countries throughout Europe and Americas. She is the former Concertmaster of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in Jackson, MS (2005-2022).

A winner of numerous awards, fellowships and prizes such as 1st Prizes at the Marbury and Yale Gordon Competitions and the 2nd Prize in the Bryan International String Competition, Ms. Szlubowska has appeared as a soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony, and many others. She has given numerous performances at Tanglewood, Meadowmount and Colorado Music Festivals. Ms. Szlubowska performed under the baton of Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa at Tanglewood, as well as Alexander Schneider at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Her passion for solo and chamber music led Ms. Szlubowska to work with various ensembles such as Mississippi Fine Arts String Trio, Mississippi Orchestra String Quartet, Inaugural Piano Trio, Tango Rendezvous Ensemble, as well as Marta Szlubowska Ensemble, a vibrant and exciting strings and accordion ensemble that showcases light classical and popular music from around the world. The ensemble has performed at St. Paul Concert Series in Meridian, Arts and Lecture Series at Millsaps College, and many more.

Ms. Szlubowska, former faculty at Millsaps College and Conservatory and the University of Southern Mississippi, holds the Bachelor’s and Artist Diploma degrees from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and Master’s Degree in Violin Performance from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her teachers include Janusz Szok, Charles Libove, Berl Senofsky and Charles Treger.
Mrs. NANCY BATEMAN, Adjunct Cello Professor at Belhaven University since 2005, received both her Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Music from Wichita State University and pursued advanced musical studies at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Along with Cello lessons, she teaches the String Methods Course and team teaches the String Pedagogy course at Belhaven. Since she started and maintained a String Music Program at First Presbyterian Day School since 1999, and the Veritas School from 2002-2010, she has years of experience teaching students grade school age through high school, as well as college level students. Because she is still teaching at First Presbyterian Day School, this affords Belhaven Students firsthand experience to observe and assist in a classroom situation. Mrs. Bateman has also taught at various Summer String Orchestra Workshops and the Mississippi Symphony Summer Camp. Nancy Bateman understands what a great honor, privilege, and responsibility it is to teach, especially students who are making career choices in their lives. She has performed as a cellist in the Wichita Symphony, the Omaha and Lincoln Symphonies, and has performed with the Mississippi Symphony since 1993 until the present. She has performed as a soloist as well as in various small ensembles for weddings, funerals, and church services.
