Rudolph Science Parody - Rudolph the Recessive Reindeer
What science can we learn from Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer? Let's see in this short, fun parody song! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: https://BioBush.tv/subscribe
There are several biology concepts that can be seen in Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.
For this song, we assume that red, shiny noses is a recessive gene, not common in reindeer sure to increased predation pressure. Rudolph's great-grandparents were assumed to have the trait, so that Rudolph could have a copy of the recessive gene from two heterozygous parents.
And you can see the difference between genotype and phenotype. Both of his parents had the gene for shiny nose (genotype), but did not display the trait themselves (phenotype). Only when two copies were present in Rudolph did the phenotype change to red, shiny nose.
In human care, the usefulness of red, shiny noses would be noticed. We often select for unusual traits in animals that would not do well in nature, because they are useful to us. It seems likely that Santa would not let a useful trait disappear, but would want more of his reindeer to have this phenotype.
