Pro-Russia protesters in Beirut support war
(20 Mar 2022) LEAD IN:
Pro-Russia protesters in Lebanon gathered outside a United Nations building in Beirut to express their support for Russia's war in Ukraine.
On the same day as the protest, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the siege of the port city of Mariupol would go down in history for what he said were war crimes committed by Russian troops.
STORY-LINE:
Dozens of people demonstrated outside the U.N. headquarters in Beirut on Sunday to express support for Russia in its war in Ukraine, holding their protest after more than three weeks into the biggest land war in Europe since World War II.
The gathering by nearly 150 Lebanese, Syrians and Russians lasted for about an hour after which the demonstrators dispersed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces are waging Russia's largest, most complex combined military campaign since taking Berlin in 1945.
Some Lebanese and Syrians support Putin whose military joined Syria's civil war in 2015 helping tip the balance of power in favor of President Bashar Assad's forces.
On the same day as the protest in Beirut, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said early Sunday the siege of the port city of Mariupol would go down in history for what he said were war crimes committed by Russian troops.
Poland has taken in more than 2 million refugees from Ukraine — the bulk of more than 3.3 million people that the U.N. says have fled since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. Hundreds of thousands have streamed into Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova and Romania.
The U.N. human rights office says it has recorded a total of 816 civilian deaths and 1,333 civilian injuries since the war began, though it believes the figures are actually much higher.
Dozens of civilians were killed and injured as a result of attacks over the past 24 hours in the eastern Donetsk region alone, Ukrainian police said Saturday.
At least 37 residential buildings and infrastructure facilities were damaged in attacks on eight cities and villages.
