1. Be great at one thing
He was born in 1962 in Croatia. At the age of eight, the family left the country to escape communist regime

2. Never complain
His family arrived in Halifax with a single suitcase and only $20. The family eventually settled in Toronto.

3. Just keep going
He graduated from New College at the University of Toronto, with a degree in English literature and political science.

4. Create value for your customers
To make a living and help support his family, he took on a variety of minimum wage jobs in the 1990s.

5. Become the person others want to know
His first career was in film at an early age. He quickly moved behind the camera in various production roles.

6. Listen to yourself
He applied for a position at a company called Logiquest, where he worked for free for six months.

7. Leave your emotions out of it
He eventually rose in the ranks to become General Manager of Logiquest.

8. Be able to adapt
After being fired from Logiquest, he founded his first company, BRAK Systems, which he later sold to AT&T Canada for $30.2 million.

9. Find what makes you tick
He founded Herjavec Group, a security solutions integrator, and managed service provider, of which he is currently the CEO.

10. You are in control of everything
Herjavec Group has grown from three employees in 2003 to 150 employees as of 2013, with a 643% growth rate from 2007–2012.
