Sarah McLachlan - Just Close Your Eyes

Back in 1992 or 1993, I walked into a record shop in Sheffield and the music playing stopped me in my tracks, enough for me to approach the sales assistant to ask what was being played. It was “Into The Fire”, by Sarah McLachlan, from the album “Solace”, came the smug response. I asked to buy the CD. I’ll have to find the cover out in the racks in the shopfloor he replied. He went looking. For ages. And he couldn’t find it. He came back and apologised. I asked him why he looked in to the Folk/Irish section, as this clearly wasn’t Folk music, or traditional Irish music. He said that is what they had classified it as, and it was being played as they have to play something from the Folk/Irish section one morning a week. So, I walked to the rock/pop section and found the case myself (smugly) and have been a fan since.

Later in the 90’s, I bought a CD single called “I Will Remember You”, which if I remember correctly featured in a film called The Brothers McMullen (note the Irish connection ironically), but also included was the Rabbit In The Moon remix of “Possession”, which opens with the sample…”Just close your eyes”. I think the mix of the voice, the lyrics and the song, remixed into a house style was very intelligent. Still, by this time, I met no one else who had even heard of Sarah McLachlan. Not until the track “Silence” appeared years later, between Delerium and Sarah McLachlan did people wake up to the voice.
