The Halo 3 Iceberg (Easter Eggs, Oddities, Conspiracy)

This video was originally meant to be creepy and ominous, but after returning to the game and playing through it again, the video took a more sentimental tone. Halo 3 is one of my favorite games, and I have been playing off and on since its release in 2007. Master Chief, the Arbiter, Johnson, and Cortana, all watched me grow up and help shape me into who I am today. I hope these tonal differences aren’t a distraction.

Halo 3 was originally released in 2007 and then re-released with the Master Chief Collection in 2014. It is a magnificent game and an excellent conclusion to the original Halo trilogy. Few have looked beneath the surface at what lingers below. Easter Eggs, Glitches, Oddities, and Conspiracy are all hidden within the code of Halo 3. Was the original game personalized to each player? Did Isolation get more infected over time? Was the IWHBYD skull found via hackers, or was there a hint system built in for some players? All these questions and more are answered within the Halo 3 Iceberg.

Some other things to add:

Chief can swim on Sierra 117. There is only one section in the game where Chief can be fully submerged in water and not drown. The dev’s must have forgot to add a kill plane in this water.

Most Cortana moments can be skipped or overlapped. By jumping on rocks and other surfaces, you can avoid a handful of Cortana moments. Further still, if you are fast enough, you can overlap Gravemind and Cortana moments, cancelling whichever moment was triggered second.

Siege of Madrigal and Microsoft Sam. By climbing on a pillar in The Covenant during the double scarab fight, the mission’s music will fade and be replaced by either the Siege of Madrigal (a song from previous Halo games) or Microsoft Sam. The left walkway plays Siege, the right pathway triggers Sam.

The 1v1. Towards the end of The Ark, Chief will enter a room with tons of jump pack Brutes and a Chieftan. The Chieftan will challenge you to a 1 on 1 fight. The jump pack brutes will not intervene until the fight is over, or you attack the brutes.

Clipping. There are a handful of clips you can do to pass through walls and other barriers. Some notable clips are:

Skipping the double Scarab fight with a deployable cover clip.
Clipping through the crashed flood ship in Floodgate and skipping straight to the end.

Using the deployable cover clip to pass through locked doors in The Ark.

One liners. Halo 3 has some great voice lines and quips.

“We’re even, as long as we’re only counting today.” -Johnson

“This is the way the world ends.” -Cortana

“Were it so easy.” -Arbiter

“There will be a great deal of hardship on the road ahead.” -Cortana

“I am a monument to all your sins.” -Cortana
